Landfills are filling the fresh air with harsh chemicals, potentially making breathing difficult. Chemicals contaminating the air is more of a concern than toxins seeping into fresh water. Not every American will drink that polluted water, but every human will breathe the air that landfill chemicals are starting to destroy. Blanchfield explains, “Increased levels of cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects among those living in Love Canal led to the eventual evacuation of many residents” (Blanchfield par. 6).Blanchfield argues that the toxic chemicals released are causing individuals in America to leave their homes because it is no longer safe for them to live there. A home is meant to be safe and inviting, but landfills are causing many families to pack up their belongings and find a new home. Not only is it a concern that these chemicals are making families leave their homes, but also causing them various medical issues. In the article, “Ohio Landfill Harms Health, Opponents Say” it claims that “Strong hydrogen sulfide emissions are so offensive that it causes headaches and burning eyes, noses and throats among residents” (“Ohio Landfill Harms Health, Opponents Say” par. 3).Basically, the article, “Ohio Landfill Harms Health, Opponents Say” says that landfills are causing health risks to Americans that are doing nothing but living in their homes with their families. There should be a more appropriate idea that deals with this trash than landfills. Landfills are destroying everything in their path. New landfills have begun to apply regulations. For example, landfill operators now understand chemicals contaminate the air, so they are putting a sealant on top of the trash to reduce this problem. New landfills have met regulations and do not allow a massive amount of toxic chemicals into the air due to landfill sealants. If landfills could stop this chemical leaking problem, landfills would not be a problem. Bud Angst, author of “Landfills Have Become Safer,” argues that landfill operators are starting to put a special absorbency mat sealant that swells in size when chemicals try to leave or water tries to get in. This mat is preventing any leaks from happening and is stopping chemical contamination (Angst par. 8). Angst is explaining that newer landfills have composed a solution to this chemical problem. If landfills started using these mats more often, chemical contamination would be prevented. The article “Modern Landfills Are Safe for the Environment” written by National Solid Wastes Management Association suggests,“Once the landfill has reached its permitted height, the landfill is closed and engineered to prevent water infiltration by installing a low permeability cap similar to the liner system (National Solid Wastes Management Association par. 10). This article explains that the cap would end chemical pollution from landfills. Landfills’ biggest complication is the amount of chemical contamination. If operators could lower the amount of chemicals released, landfills would not be as dangerous of a solution to the trash issue. While these caps would help landfills lower the pollution amount, they would not completely eliminate the chemical problem. Scientists should continue their work attempting to think of a better idea to deal with America’s trash than landfills. Although landfills have some positive effects, the negative outcomes substantially outweigh any positives.
